My Ostrem McKenzie Boat Project
Gonna Chronicle My Ostrem McKenzie Boat Restore adventure here... among other projects.
I am trying to find out more about this boat... it is at least 35 years old... maybe older. I corresponded with Roger Fletcher about Ostrem, and he said John Ostrem was one of his favorite builders. Roger also said he owned an Ostrem built in 1967 and it is the boat that started his love of McKenzie boats. He also said that John used a Woodie Hindman design... so I don't think you can go wrong with this!
The condition is pretty good considering the age. There are no huge dings or repairs and I can not find any rot, YET. Thank God for our arid SW Idaho climate. The finish is shot.. but a lot of elbow grease and sand paper should help that. It has a UMHW bottom and I am not sure I will keep that or not. It even has oars and an anchor and oarlocks... the oars are pretty far gone, but I may be able to restore them too. Floorboards are plywood and not slats. Don't know if I will keep them or not. And yes, it does have the rabbited frames.
One of the first steps is to clean up the Name Plate so I can read it... then one of the first major steps is going to be pull the UMHW off and see what condition the bottom is in and determine if I need to replace that or not. After that I will start in on LOTS of sanding. I already decided I will replace the gunwales, chine cap, and stem cap. I have also decided I will Oil the inside, and not sure about the outside yet.
